AFTERNOON OF A FAUN is a Norman Lindsay Facsimile Etching and was published in 2001 to the limited edition print size of 550, the edition has been sold out for some time, Etching House has just a few from its archive collection available.

The original etching reference may be found in the book titled Norman Lindsay Catalogue Raisonne “Norman Lindsay Etchings” Reference (1999, cat.69) available for sale by Etching House, the image size is 9.7 x 8.1cm, this Facsimile Etchings sold out around 2007, (This image is extremely hard to find) the secondary market has seen any coming in for resale appreciate in value.

The original etching Afternoon of a Faun was etched by Norman Lindsay around c.1920. Rose pulled approximately fifty prints from the plate but it was never published because of its erotic content.

When Matisse illustrated the same subject (Mallarmé’s poem L’Apres-midi d’un faune), he too resorted to neoclassical convention ‘to remind us of the pagan simplicity and vitality of the designs on Greek vases and the erotic murals at Pompeii and Herculaneum’.
